Went to Dolly Sods yesterday. Was a beautiful day, upper 40's, until I got it to Bear Rock Preserve. It was 31°, wind was blowing at about 25 to 30 MPH with gust up to 60 MPH. On top of that there was an ice storm.
Fall is the time to go for drives in dirt roads. Forest road from Dolly Sods to Canaan Valley is so scenic that I had to stop every 5 minutes to take pictures. Looking forward to my 4th straight weekend roadtrip to West Virginia. @tuckercounty_wv #dollysods#bearrocks @wvtourism @wvstateparks
Eastern Hayscented Fern (Dennstaedtia punctilobula) • Finally got around to editing some of my photographs from my time in West Virginia! The Dolly Sods Wilderness was the most interesting photographically for me, as the plant species were beautiful and quite diverse. I especially loved the range of colors I saw in the eastern hayscented ferns, which covered vast sections of Dolly Sods. Tia and I visited Monongahela mid September. The effects of an incredibly dry, hot summer could still be felt in most of the national forest. In the higher reaches of the Appalachian however, the cool, wet breath of ...
My little adventurer. . She’s never afraid of what we throw her way. I’m excited for the next few weeks and months! Our travels have begun and we’re heading towards Destin, Florida for some relaxation. Then driving to the Keys to practice Overlanding in the Equinox! Then visiting family for the holidays and then beginning our travels through Mexico and Central America for about 5 months! . We decided to postpone going to South America so that we could dedicate more time to it and work out the logistics better. We’re going to be driving my car and taking our ...
Two sides of sunrise | Dolly Sods, West Virginia. Photo 1 is after the sun broke through, just for a moment, lighting everything in a lovely golden hue. Photo 2 is the same basic scene, shot before the sun came up. Curious to know which you prefer! . . . #almostheaven#westvirginia
Allegheny Front, 2019 • • • Been taking the opportunity to shoot landscapes with a longer lens when I can, lately. The miles of rolling hills and mountains of WV lend itself well to the compression of the telephoto. Hoping to develop my eye further for stuff like this, and train myself to see the possibilities in composition. • • • • #telephoto#travelphotography
The first successful backpacking trip without any torrential downpour, until we were back in the car! I'm looking forward to where we're going next. Any recommendations for places to camp in the North East/Mid-Atlantic? . #dollysods#backpacking
Those who don’t feel this love pulling them like a river, those who don’t drink dawn like a cup of spring water or take in sunset like a supper, those who don’t want to change... let them sleep. — Rumi
Stack Rock Sun, Setting 2019 • • • Back from a few nights back country(ish) camping in the Dolly Sods wilderness. Had a mountain glade full of ferns all to ourselves. Got our dumb summer asses kicked the first night when the low hit 27 degrees somewhat unexpectedly. We brought warm clothes and extra blankets, built a strong fire in anticipation of mountain climate but it’s a different experience entirely when you’re in warm weather tent and bags while all around you branches are snapping completely off of trees due to the intense cold. In a year full of underestimating ...
